Apr 21, Fromm Gold Dry Food Review: Small Breed Adult Dogs

    Last Updated 04-23-2023

This Fromm Gold Dry Food Review was
requested by Connie from Florida. She wants to know if this formula for small
breed adult dogs is a good choice for her adult dogs.

Before examining the food, we like to look at the company
behind the product.  What we found was
    very favorable.

The company started out over a century ago and has slowly evolved
to where it is now, producing dog food.
It has remained in the same family and is a family run business touting
    five generations of hardworking individuals.

    The company owns and operates
its own manufacturing facilities, one in Mequon, WI and the other in
    Columbus, Wisconsin.  Operating their own
facilities gives dog food manufacturers a
    distinct advantage:

They can have control of quality and
safety.  They also do in-house lab
analysis, preparation of the meat and produce, packaging, warehousing, and distribution.

It should be noted that not
all dog food companies have this much control over their product.  The fact that is sourced and made in the
United States is also a big plus as there is much more governmental control in
this country than in other countries.

The following “Small Breed Adult Dog Food was taken from
    Fromm Family Foods.” website

    Examining the Guaranteed Analysis

A consumer cannot go by the amounts of protein and fat found
in the Guaranteed Analysis.  You can, however, get a crude estimate of the quantity of protein and fat in the dog
food.  These numbers are only a starting
point if you want to compare one food to another.  To make it easier to compare foods, you must
take the moisture or water content of the food into consideration because this percentage
    significantly affects the overall
    values.

We convert the figures in the Guaranteed Analysis to a Dry Matter, which accounts for the water in the
    product. We use the formula:

However, in the case of this company, they have done all the
calculations for you.  Based on the Fromm
    Family website:

    Dry Matter Basis Calculations

    Protein:  28.67%
    Fat:  18.75%
    Fiber:  3.22%
    Ash:  6.57%
    Carbohydrates:  42.79%

    Calculating the Carbohydrate Percentage

You might be wondering about Carbohydrates found in this
food.  Pet food manufacturers are not required to list the Carbohydrate percentage
of food, but you can still estimate it using the figures from the Guaranteed
    Analysis.

This company did provide this number but most do not.
Remember that dogs are carnivores, so it is interesting to determine how
much of their diet consists of plant sources.

Fromm Gold Dry Food contains 42.79% Carbohydrates

    Conclusions

The company has been in existence for a very long time and
have been manufacturing dog food longer than most.  Their score based on Sarah Irick’s Ratings is
superior to most other foods.  They
provide a very respectable variety of protein sources and include vegetables in
the mix.  Two other positives to this
food are the inclusion of probiotics, and a healthy
    ratio of Omega Fatty Acids.

According to the Fromm Website, there is the adequate distribution of the product, at least
within the United States. I could not find evidence of any recalls with this
    product.

This company provides more information on their website than
most do include actual amounts of
minerals, vitamins, protein, fat, ash and carbohydrates.  In my mind,
this is an excellent indicator of transparency and the willingness disclose
information that most companies keep hidden from their consumers.

The pieces of kibble are smaller and easier to manage than
other brands that do not cater to small breed dogs.  If this is important to you, and it should
be, then this should also add to the appeal of the product.

Overall, this food deserves an above average rating as it
    offers high-quality nutrition that is
safe, affordable, and readily obtainable.  Small Dog Place gives this food a very high score.

Cost and Availability of Fromm Gold Dry Food

The product comes in two sizes:  5 pounds and 15 pounds and is sold in
specialty pet stores throughout the country.
The product is also available in Canada, Denmark, Germany, Hong Kong,
    Macau, Singapore and the UK.

Online, you can purchase a 5-pound
bag for about $19.00.  This works out to
be about less than $4.00 per pound.
Certainly not the most expensive food, it comparable to other high-quality pet foods.
